Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday reaffirmed the Congress party’s commitment to the welfare of the people, stating that the Opposition will continue to leverage democratic institutions to fight for their rights.
Highlighting the work done by Congress-led Standing Committees during the recently concluded Budget Session of Parliament, Gandhi said the panels made several constructive recommendations aimed at improving the lives of ordinary Indians.
“In the Budget Session of Parliament, Congress-led Standing Committees made several suggestions to improve the lives of Indians,” he said in a post on X.
He cited the Agriculture Committee, chaired by Charanjit Singh Channi, which renewed its demand for a legal Minimum Support Price (MSP) and recommended additional compensation for stubble collection, as well as enhanced protections for farmers and fishermen.
He also pointed to the Rural Development Committee, chaired by Saptagiri Ulaka, which called for strengthening and expanding the MNREGA scheme and urged the removal of unnecessary bureaucratic barriers.
The Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, under Digvijaya Singh, proposed increased teacher recruitment, anti-paper leak reforms, and better honorariums for Anganwadi workers. Meanwhile, the External Affairs Committee, led by Dr. Shashi Tharoor, stressed the need for better safeguards for Indian migrant workers.
“These are just a few examples of the Congress Party’s unwavering commitment to the people’s welfare,” Gandhi stated, adding, “Even while in Opposition, we will continue to use every democratic institution to fight for the rights and well-being of the people of India.”
The Budget Session, which ran from January 31 to April 4, saw the introduction of 10 government bills and the passage of 16, including the contentious Waqf Amendment Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill. Parliament will next convene during the Monsoon Session, with dates yet to be announced.
